HOUSTON -- Junior midfielder Kimber Bailey scored two goals and had an assist to pace the 22nd-ranked SMU women's soccer team to a rain-soaked 5-1 Conference USA victory over Rice Sunday afternoon at the Owls' Soccer Stadium.
In the 33rd minute Bailey served a long pass to senior forward Olivia O'Rear on a breakaway, who scored from 12 yards out with a shot to the back of the net on the right side. In the 36th minute Bailey scored on a run-and-slide past the Rice keeper to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Rice answered with a goal in the second period to cut the margin to 2-1. The same Owl tandem that combined for the winning goal over Tulsa two days before struck the same scoring note in the 50th minute. Freshman forward Erin Scott made a steal off a defender on the right wing and passed to senior midfielder Maria Fadool to break free from the traffic. Fadool quickly served it back to Scott who found and opening from 13 yards away and scored with a shot in the left side of the net. The Fadool-to-Scott duo teamed for their second assist-and-goal in 48 hours. It was the team-leading sixth goal of the season for Scott, a true freshman from Richardson, Tex.
SMU came right back with a score in the 52nd minute. A Rice foul at the top of the 18-yard line gave the Ponies a free kick from close range. Bailey blasted a shot over the Rice wall for her second goal of the day and her sixth goal of the season. SMU stretched the lead to 5-1 with scores in the 57th minute and 78th minute, by Kim Peabody and Kristen Moran, respectively.
Rice, battling a ranked team in the rain with four starters on the sidelines due to injuries, fell to 10-4-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in league play. SMU moved to 12-2-1 on the year and remained unbeaten in C-USA action at 5-0-0.
Rice must plays each of its next three C-USA games on the road to close out the league's regular season slate. The Owls face Memphis and UAB, respectively, on Oct. 20 and Oct. 22. The Blue and Gray face crosstown rival Houston at UH on Oct. 27.
