Houston - While the rest of the college football world was playing opening games Saturday, Rice played make believe in a dress rehearsal scrimmage at Rice Stadium.
Coach Ken Hatfield sent his squad through a 90-minute workout in game uniforms under the lights in the Stadium, and a trio of receivers emerged as the big stars.
Nick Aranda (North Zulch/Huntsville) caught a pair of long passes from Jeramy Goodson (Houston/Lamar Consolidated), including a 53-yard touchdown connection on the first series of the night.
Gary Anderson (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Robinson) and Tommy Henderson (Wichita Falls/High) later caught long passes in the workout. Anderson had a 47-yard bomb from Joel Armstrong (Longview/High) that was part of the starters' final touchdown drive, and Henderson's 39-yard pass from Chase Clement (San Antonio/Alamo Heights) helped set up a late field goal.
Armstrong had earlier connected with Andrew Cates (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) on a 13-yard TD pass, and Quinton Smith (Cedar Park/High) scored on an 11-yard run.
A third touchdown for the starters came on Matt Ginn's 85-yard interception return.
The Owls open their 2005 season next Saturday at UCLA in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
