Houston - Rice's football team got back to practice Tuesday, almost one week after suspending operations due to the approach of Hurricane Rita.
The Owls' game with Navy, scheduled for last Saturday, was rescheduled for Oct. 22. Next is the Conference USA opener this week at UAB in Birmingham, Ala.
"They came back and worked hard," said head coach Ken Hatfield of the two-hour workout on the grass practice field. "We know it's a conference game. This is what we're playing for, and I knew there would be a good focus on their assignments.
"I was pleased with the leadership of the team and all the guys that football means a lot to."
Hatfield had released the team last Wednesday afternoon when Rita was a category-five hurricane predicted to make landfall in the Galveston-Freeport area. Most players and staff evacuated inland, although the University's residential colleges remained open for shelter during the crisis.
Rice is 0-2 after season-opening losses to UCLA and second-ranked Texas. UAB, coached by former Rice coach Watson Brown, is 2-1. Game time at Legion Field is 6 pm (CDT).
