Teams from 10 universities and 35 high schools will compete at the 31st annual Rice Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday on the Rice campus.
The Owls play host to UTSA, UT-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin (women), Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, Southern and Southwestern, with the University Women's four-kilometer race set to run at 8:20 a.m., and the University Men's 6K slated for 8:45. All the day's races will finish on the track at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium.
Entering the first year of competition as members of Conference USA, the Owls will look to repeat the success they had in the Western Athletic Conference last season.
Rice won the 2004 WAC men's team title behind individual champion Marcel Hewamudalige, and advanced three runners to the NCAA national championships. Hewamudalige, a senior from Vancouver, British Columbia, is back for 2005 and will lead a young Owls squad that includes NCAA regional track qualifiers David Axel and Charles Hampton.
Kate Gorry won the 2004 WAC women's individual championship to lead the Owls to a second-place team finish, and she returns along with Marissa Daniels, who qualified for the NCAA nationals as a freshman last season.
High school competition will be spread across several divisions. The Big Schools varsity races will feature 5A schools and selected smaller schools, while the Small Schools races will include sub-5A teams. All high school races are run over two miles.
