Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The Rice Owls golf team improved five positions on the final day of action at the 37th Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational to place eighth with an 891 total, just seven strokes from being in the top five in the 17-team field. Air Force captured the team title at 868(281-286-301 +4). The Owls shot a 291 on Sunday which was the fourth-lowest team total in the final round.
First-year Rice head coach Drew Scott was pleased with his team's initial performance of the season. "I thought we played well today and we had a total team effort," comments Scott. "We had it going on Sunday and only a few teams beat us in the final round. This momentum is certainly something that we can build on."
Individually, freshman Kaz Hoffman placed eighth in his first-ever collegiate event with a one-under 215 total (68-75-72). Boise State's Graham Delaet took medalist honors at 206 (67-70-69 -10).
The Owls now have two weeks off until Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate (Vanderbilt Legends Club) that runs Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 in Nashville, Tenn.
