Houston - Sophomore quarterback Joel Armstrong and junior fullback Andrew Cates got some game-type action Wednesday in the Owls' controlled scrimmage.
Armstrong (Longview/High) had been held out of contact work recently with a groin injury, while Cates (Atlanta, Ga./Marist) suffered a concussion alomost two weeks ago. They both scrimmaged with the first unit Wednesday.
"It was good to get them some action once again," said head coach Ken Hatfield, but he reserved most of his praise for the Rice defense.
"The defense came up with a couple of big turnovers once again," he added. "They are flying around the ball, and they didn't give up a lot of the long runs and passes like they had earlier in the summer."
