Houston - A series of leg injuries have kept Gary Anderson Jr. (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Acad.) on the Rice sidelines the past two seasons, but the redshirt sophomore may have the opportunity to show his talents in the coming days.
Rice team doctors released Anderson to participate in practice Monday, and coach Ken Hatfield was immediately impressed with the wide receiver's speed. "He can fly," said Hatfield. "He would really be a plus if he can do it in pads, too."
Anderson's return was tempered by the loss of freshman quarterback John Shepherd (El Dorado, Ark./High), who suffered a broken collarbone in Saturday's scrimmage. The injury prompted the move of freshman Jeramy Goodson (Houston/Lamar Consolidated) back to quarterback while Shepherd heals.
The Owls will also be without freshman running back Chris Douglas (Fort Worth/All Saints Episcopal) with a shoulder injury, and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Todd Mohr (Houston/Cypress Creek) with an injured foot.
