HOUSTON -- - With starting quarterback Joel Armstrong (Longview/High) nursing a slight groin pull, redshirt freshman Chase Clement (San Antonio/Alamo Heights) got the vast majority of the playing time during Rice's two-hour scrimmage Saturday morning, ending the Owls' preseason camp.
"We play two quarterbacks in our system, and this was the right time to get a long look at Chance," said head coach Ken Hatfield. "We played freshman John Shepherd (El Dorado, Ark./High) a good bit, and he did some good things, too."
The defensive effort was sparked by interception returns for touchdowns by Matt Ginn (Arlington/High) and Aubrey White (Thorndale/High), a good defensive stand after a long run by fullback John Wall (Dallas/Jesuit), and a blocked field-goal try.
"Offensively, we made some big things happen," added Hatfield. "We had a couple of second-and-20 situations and overcame them. Mike Falco (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) made two or three great runs after he caught the ball, and Tommy Henderson (Wichita Falls/High) showed what a great athlete he is on a couple of deep passes."
Saturday's scrimmage also saw the full-time return of senior defensive end Thadis Pegues (Friendswood/Clear Brook) after regaining his eligibility during the summer. "It was his first scrimmage and he made about five big plays with his ability," said Hatfield.
With the start of fall semester classes Monday, the Owls will return to their regular-season afternoon workout schedule. Rice opens its 2005 season on Sept. 10 at UCLA.
