HOUSTON -- - Rice got an early chance for some wet-ball drills Monday afternoon in Rice Stadium.
Originally scheduled for a 9:15 am workout on the grass field, the Owls instead worked moved to the AstroTurf surface of the Stadium in the evening following early-afternoon thunderstorms. The turf was wet, but coach Ken Hatfield welcomed the opportunity to work with the damp conditions.
"We slipped a bit too much on the field and we'll have to make some corrections with the shoes some of the guys have," he said. "They saw how hard it is to throw and catch the wet ball, and I think this will help."
Rice will put on full pads for the first time for Tuesday's two-hour practice on the grass field, although Hatfield said that hitting may be limited due to the absence of the Owl freshmen. That group is participating in the University's orientation week activities and their practice attendance will be spotty through the week.
