Houston -- - The process of catch-up has started early in Rice's preseason football practices.
With coach Ken Hatfield announcing early on that all 26 freshmen should be ready to contribute in 2005, the process to get them caught up with their returning teammates has taken an early priority. Much of the first two workouts have included intensive teaching of assignments and nomenclature.
"The biggest thing is teaching and getting the freshman to know what the heck we're talking about," said Hatfield after Friday's workout. "We're going to play some of them, but they're not used to the speed of the game and everything we're doing."
Rice's normal procedure during the preseason calls for morning practices followed by meetings and assignment walk-throughs in the afternoon. That will be the schedule until fall semester classes begin at Rice on Aug. 22.
Hatfield also announced Friday that the playing career of junior offensive tackle David Carter is over. The Dallas (Greenhill) native was scheduled to vie for the starting job at left tackle this fall, but a series of shoulder injuries will keep him off the field.
"After consultation with our doctors and his doctors over the summer, he decided that his shoulders would not be able to hold up, especially as an offensive lineman," Hatfield said. "He'll be helping the team in another capacity, but he won't be able to play anymore."
