HOUSTON - Rice will celebrate its move into Conference USA and its new athletics website with a reception on Thursday, June 30, at the Ragin' Cajun Restaurant, 9600 Westheimer at Gessner, associate athletic director Mike Pedé has announced.
"We will be toasting Rice's new affiliation with C-USA as well as the new look of RiceOwls.com," said Pedé. "Commissioner Britton Banowsky, athletic director Bobby May and many of our coaches will be on hand to meet the media and Owl fans."
The reception, beginning at 6 pm, will be hosted by SportsRadio 610's John Granato and is open to all Houston-area Rice fans.
Rice will become a member of C-USA on July 1 after nine years of membership in the Western Athletic Conference. Rice, UTEP, Tulsa, SMU, UCF, and Marshall will be joining holdover members Houston, Tulane, Southern Miss, Memphis, UAB and East Carolina to form the new 12-team, all-sports conference.
Rice's first event as a C-USA member will be the Sept. 21 volleyball match at Houston. Soccer will initiate play in the new league on Sept. 30 against East Carolina in the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, while football opens C-USA play at UAB in Birmingham, Ala., on Oct. 1.
