Rice Golfers Place Third at Battle on the Bend

Many, La. - The Rice Owls golf team placed third at the Battle on the Bend with a final round score of 300 to finish at 877 (288-289-300). Held at Cypress Bend Golf Resort, the Battle on the Bend medalist honors went Owl senior Parker LaBarge. LaBarge (69-69-73=211; -5) won the tournament by two strokes over New Orleans' Anthony Cantu (72-71-70=213; -3). New Orleans won the tournament with an 860 (284-283-293), while Southeastern Louisiana fired a final-round low of 288 to place second (292-289-288=869).
"I'm disappointed we didn't play better today with a good opportunity to take care of business," says head coach Drew Scott. "But, also I'm happy that Parker (LaBarge) played well and won the tournament."
LaBarge's first place showing is the first individual Owl victory since Ryan Morgan won the Colbert Invitational in October 2002. Says LaBarge, "I've been playing well during the fall season and it's been a couple of shots here and there that has been the difference between an average score and shooting a 69. In this tournament, I was able to make better decisions and better swings through out the three rounds."
Also garnering a top 10 finish was sophomore Addison Awe. Awe placed tied for sixth at 216 (72-70-74).
The Battle on the Bend was Rice's final fall event. The Owls will next be in action when they host the Rice Intercollegiate at Wildcat GC on Feb. 6-7, 2006.
