With a reshuffled line-up and the momentum created by a win over 13th-ranked Texas Tech Monday, Rice will face Penn Saturday at 2:30 (CST) in the opening game of the Husky Classic women's basketball tournament at the University of Washington.
The Owls, 1-1 after Monday's 73-70 upset of Tech, face a Penn team that is also 1-1 after downing Lehigh and losing to 21st-ranked Temple. The Quakers are led by guard Joey Rhoads and senior center Jennifer Fleischer. Rhoads had 26 points and 10 rebounds against Lehigh, and Fleischer had 12 points and 11 boards in the loss to Temple.
If Rice wins the opening game, they will face the winner of the Washington-San Diego game at 5 pm (CST) Sunday.
Amber Cunningham will start at guard for the Owls in place of injured Whitney McCauley. McCauley, who had replaced Maudess Fulton in the starting rotation after Fulton suffered a season-ending ACL injury in the final exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars, fell victim to an ACL injury in practice Wednesday and is out for the season.
"We need to do the things right that we did against Texas Tech," said first-year head coach Greg Williams. "If we can be as aggressive as we were Monday and keep our focus, we will have some good games this weekend. It will be important for all our players to communicate on the court and maintain the intensity we showed in the last game."
The Rice-Penn game can be heard on KTRU, 91.7 FM in Houston, and on the web at www.ktru.org/ktruwmp2002.asx.
