HOUSTON - The Rice volleyball team wraps up the 2005 regular season this weekend at the Irish Thanksgiving Invitational in South Bend, Ind., facing seventh ranked Notre Dame on Friday at 7 pm and ninth-ranked Louisville on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
The matches are the first of the year for the Owls against ranked opponents. Rice is 17-10 this season while both Notre Dame and Louisville are 27-2. Both of the Cardinals' losses in 2005 were to the Irish.
The Owls' leaders in 2005, seniors Olaya Pazo and Kristina Hoban as well as junior Tessa Kuykendall have posted numbers that rank among the best single seasons at Rice. With 489 kills so far, Pazo ranks seventh and can move up to fifth with just 10 more. She also ranks 10th in digs with 364. Hoban now appears on the top 10 list for assists for the third time with her 1,258 checking in at ninth. Kuykendall, who tied the season record for total blocks last year, has added her name again in 2005, ranking sixth in both block assists (113) and total blocks (136).
