Waco -
Sophomore transfer Charles Hampton was 17th at the NCAA South Central regional cross country meet Saturday in Waco to lead Rice's men. Three of the Owls' top runners failed to finish the 10-kilometer race due to injury and illness, as Hampton covered the course in 31:56.75.
Conference USA runner-up Marcel Hewamudalige, suffering from a hamstring injury, dropped out after two miles, while Pablo Solares and Scott Loftin also did not finish.
"Today we had everything that could go wrong, go wrong," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "Three people who should have finished in the top 30 or 40 did not even finish for us, and it was a very sad way to end the season."
Senior David Axel had one of the best races of his career to finish 27th in 32:35.75, and sophomore Colby Keithan was 32nd at 32:51.50.
Texas-Pan American's Westly Keating won the individual title at 29:30.75, and Arkansas captured the team title with 33 points.
