Franklin, Tenn. -- The Rice golf team shot 294 in the final round of Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Intercollgiate (Vanderbilt Legends Club) and placed 11th with a three-round total of 895 (298-303-294). Virginia, which was two strokes behind SMU after the second round, shot 281 on Sunday to win the tournament at 858 (292-285-281, -6). Luke List, of Vanderbilt, took home medalist honors with a seven-under 209 (72-72-65).
The Owls were led by freshman Kaz Hoffman, who finished tied for 26th with a 221 (75-75-71, +5). It is the second tournament out of two, in which Hoffman has posted Rice's lowest score. "I thought we played a lot better today and our final round score was seventh," comments head coach Drew Scott. "That should give us confidence going into next week's tournament. It was also good that we were able to drop a 76 from our team score (only top four individual scores are counted towards the team total). I also thought that Kaz (Hoffman) and Parker (LaBarge) played well today and throught the tournament."
Rice is next in action when it competes in the Baylor Invitational on Oct. 10-11, 2005, in Waco.
