Rice Places Fourth at Squire Creek Invitational

Choudrant, La. - The Rice Owls golf team posted a 289 final-round score at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational to place fourth in the 20-team field. The Owls finished at 878 (291-298-289). The 289 posted by Rice on Tuesday was the lowest score of any team. The Owls were led by freshman Kyle Kelley, who went five-under on the day with a 67.
Rice head coach Drew Scott was certainly proud of how the Owls competed during the final round. "I was really pleased that we were able to beat 16 teams, including a few in our district," stated Scott. "Our guys had a lot of fire in them and they played their hearts out today."
The 878 by Rice is the lowest score posted by the Rice golfers in a three-round tournament since Sept. 16-17, 2002, when the Owls shot an 870 (296-287-287) at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Franklin, Tenn.
Mississippi captured the team title at the tournament, shooting a three-round team total of nine-under-par 855 to edge Texas-Arlington (859), Mississippi State (865), Rice (878), and Louisiana-Lafayette (878).
Texas-Arlington's Zack Reeves pared the fourth hole of a three-way playoff to capture individual honors. Reeves finished the two-day tournament at five-under-par 211 and tied with Louisiana-Monroe's Tim Kunick and Ole Miss' Chris Rogers.
After all three players pared the 18th hole twice on the first two holes of the playoff, Reeves and Kunick knocked Rogers out on the third playoff hole with pars. The duo then went to the par 3 16th hole where Kunick knocked his tee shot into the hazard as Reeves captured the win with a two-putt par.
Rice concludes fall action on Nov. 7-9 at the Battle on the Bend in Many, La. Louisiana-Lafayette is the host institution.
