Houston - Charlie Rizzo has been named Rice's defensive coordinator in a staff adjustment announced Tuesday by head coach Ken Hatfield.
Rizzo, in his eighth year on the Rice staff, will continue to coach the Owls' inside linebackers. Roger Hinshaw, who has coordinated the Rice defense since 1998 and is in his 12th season on the Owl staff, will continue to coach the safeties.
"As a linebacker coach and defensive coordinator, Charlie will have more time to devote to the overall planning of our defensive attack," said Hatfield. "Coach Hinshaw and coach (Barney) Farrar will be able to devote more time to improving our secondary play, and coach (Theo) Young will continue to guide our front attack."
Rice (0-4, 0-2 in Conference USA) will open its home season Saturday against Tulsa (3-3, 2-1) at 3 pm in Rice Stadium.
