Stillwater, Okla. -
Rice senior Marcel Hewamudalige placed eighth overall to pace the Owls to a fifth-place finish at the Cowboy Jamboree cross country meet Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.
Running on a very muddy course, the Canadian clocked 25:56 for eight kilometers and helped Rice score 179 points. Perennial national champions Arkansas ran away with the team title, scoring 41 points, and grabbed the individual gold with Josphat Boit crossing the line at 24:33.
Sophomore transfer Charles Hampton had another strong outing for the Owls, finishing 18th in 25:53. The other scorers for Rice were David Axel, 54th in 26:56, Pablo Solares, 67th in 27:15, and Colby Keithan, who was 71st in 27:21. Freshman Justin Maxwell placed 84th with a time of 27:35.
"Marcel again ran very well," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "The conditions were extrememly challenging after Friday night's downpours, but he managed to keep his focus and stay with the lead pack much of the way. I would have liked our pack to be a bit tighter behind Charles, and that is something we need to work on before the Pre-Nationals meet in two weeks."
