Men's Basketball: UTEP Beats Rice 96-67

El Paso, Texas -- Texas-El Paso (12-2, 2-0), with five players in double-figures, defeated Rice 96-67 in front of the 10,587 fans at the Don Haskins Center. Omar Thomas with a game-high 26 points and Miguel Ayala with 20 points led the Miner attack. Will Kimble and Jason Williams each had 14 and Filiberto Rivera add 11 points and eight assists for UTEP.

Rice (7-4, 2-1) was led by Lorenzo Williams who tied his career-high with 13 points. Michael Harris posted his eighth double-double of the season (41st in career) with 10 points and 15 rebounds, two shy of his career-high. Jamaal Moore came off the bench to make all five of his field goal attempts en route to scoring 12 points.

The Owls were ahead 30-28 with 6:32 to go in the first half, but UTEP closed out the half on a 20-8 run to take a 48-38 half-time lead. The Miners started the second stanza by outscoring the Owls 23-10 to effectively put the game away at 71-48 with 12:10 to go in the game.

Rice now plays at Boise State (72-71 winners over visiting Tulsa) on Saturday at 3 pm (CST). The game can be heard on ESPN 790 AM.
