On Sunday Ashley Anderson moved into second place for career goals scored.

HOUSTON -- The Rice soccer team exploded for three goals late in the second half and senior goalkeeper Lauren Shockley recorded her third consecutive complete game shutout and sixth of the season to pace the Owls to a 4-0 win over visiting North Texas Sunday afternoon at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.

Rice improved to 7-1-2 overall and is unbeaten in its last seven games. With the team's third-straight shutout Shockley extended her current scoreless streak to 337:35 consecutive minutes.

The Owls controlled the tempo early in the first half, taking nine of the first 10 shots in the game. In a near-replay of road win at Saint Louis two days before, senior midfielder Angela Aaker came off the bench and sparked the team with a quick goal that would prove to be the difference. The standout from Kingwood entered the game in the 26th minute and scored on her only shot of the day in the 28th minute.

True freshman Lennie Waite passed the ball into the center from the left side where senior Sarah Yoder made an immediate deflection to Aaker, who was all alone in front of the goalkeeper's box. A tap to the back of the net gave the Owls a 1-0 lead and Aaker her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

North Texas turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and the teams exchanged 16 shots evenly, 8-8. Four of the Mean Green attempts were off the mark and Shockley corralled the remaining four. The game was still a tight, 1-0 contest with 16 minutes remaining, but the Owls found another gear.

In the 75th minute Waite made another perfect pass to set up a score. Her sharp cross from the right side was headed by true freshman Clory Martin and sailed passed the North Texas keeper to the back left corner of the net. Martin regained a share of the team lead in goals (5) and sparked the Blue and Gray to two more late scores.

In the 85th minute senior Ashley Anderson got on the board by blasting a shot from 18 yards out. The ball came in hard enough to get through the keeper's legs for a goal before she could make a save. Two minutes later the Owls made it 4-0 when sophomore Maria Fadool fielded a pass from Yoder at the left corner of the box and alertly converted on her only attempt of the day despite some defensive traffic.

Rice tallied three goals in the final 16 minutes. The late outburst equaled the most second-half goals by the Blue and Gray this season. North Texas fell to 5-3. Freshman Heather Hutyra attempted three shots for the Mean Green.

Rice will next be in action on the road against the University of Hawaii on Oct. 1 (Friday). A boxscore from the game can be viewed at the above link.
