SAN MARCOS -- Sarah Yoder, Jackie Rellas and Clory Martin made the most of their shots and goalkeeper Lauren Shockley posted another complete game shutout, leading Rice to a 3-0 win over Texas State Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex in San Marcos.

The overflow crowd of 834 almost spilled onto the field in some parts of the complex, but even that would not have been enough to slow the Owls Friday. Rice built a quick 2-0 lead in the first half then sealed its fifth win of the season with a dynamic insurance goal in the second.

Rice controlled the tempo early and senior forward Sarah Yoder seemed energized about playing so close to her hometown of Helotes. In the eighth minute she fielded a quick pass from teammate Maria Fadool and promptly lined a scoring strike from 14 yards in front of the Bobcat keeper. It was Yoder's second goal of the season and the 20th in the career of the Owls' all-time leading scorer.

Literally one minute after Jackie Rellas came off the bench and into the game in the 29th minute, the senior from Plano scored on her first shot of the night in the 30th minute to put the Blue and Gray ahead 2-0. Junior Erin Droeger blasted a long centering ball to Rellas, who beat her defender and then the keeper one-on-one from inside the box.

Texas State, however, would not go away so easy on its home field. The Bobcats took seven shots in the first half and another eight in the second. Three of the shots bounded off the post and six were successfully corralled by Shockley. The Owls' senior keeper would go on to finish the contest with her fourth complete game shutout, all of which have been in hostile territory on the road.

The exclamation point to the evening was midway through the second half with Rice's third and final score. While dribbling faster than two Texas State defenders trying to keep up without the ball, true freshman forward Clory Martin covered almost half the length of the field on her way to the Bobcat goal. The keeper came out to meet the challenge and dove at the ball, but the Rice rookie won the joust and stayed in control. Player and ball both went side by side safely to the back of the net for a 3-0 Rice lead.

The Owls improved to 5-1-2 and are unbeaten in their last five games. Texas State fell to 2-5. Rice will next be in action on the road against the University of Saint Louis on Sept. 24 (Friday). The team will then be at home against state-rival North Texas on Sept. 26 (Sunday).
