Volleyball: Pazo Leads Owls To Roadrunner Invitational Title

SAN ANTONIO, Texas ? Rebeca Pazo earned MVP honors as the Rice volleyball team defeated Drake 30-22, 30-23, 30-25 to go 3-0 over the weekend and win the crown at the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday in San Antonio.

Olaya Pazo led the Owls in game one with four kills and three blocks as Rice scored the first point and never looked back. Rebecca Kainz was also solid in the opening set, knocking down three kills on her five attempts with no errors.

The Bulldogs kept things closer in the second game, but it was Rebeca Pazo's time to shine as she blasted eight kills in 14 tries, to hit .571 in the set. Lindsey Carter added five kills and a solo block as the Owls pulled away.

In game three, Drake jumped out to an early lead, but Rice turned things around as Tessa Kuykendall served five-consecutive points to give the Owls a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the match. Kuykendall had five kills and a pair of blocks to lead Rice to victory in the final set.

As a team, the Owls hit .235 (49-18-132) while holding Drake to .096 (37-24-136). Rebeca Pazo finished with a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs. Carter was next for Rice with 10 kills. Libero Yvette Kirk matched Pazo with 14 digs. Olaya Pazo finished with eight kills.

Pazo finished the tournament with 56 kills, averaging 5.6 kills per game on her way to MVP honors. Joining her on the all-tournament team were Kuykendall and Kirk.

With the win the Owls improve to 6-1 on the year, their best start since going 7-1 to open the 2000 season. Next up for Rice is a Tuesday match against cross-town rival Houston at Autry Court at 7 pm.
