Soccer: Owls Defeat Army 2-1 In Overtime

HOUSTON -- True freshman Clory Martin had an assist on the Owls' first goal and then scored the game-winner in overtime to lead the Rice soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Army Friday night at the Track/Soccer Stadium.

Eight minutes into overtime, Rice senior Ashley Anderson made a long crossing pass from the left side into traffic in the goalkeeper's box. The Army keeper swatted the ball away, but Martin alertly played the deflection into the back of the net for the game-winner.

It was a season-high three-point night for Martin, who finished with a goal and an assist. The freshman forward from Austin assisted on Rice's first score of the game in the 66th minute. She first took control of an Army touch and then found teammate Maria Fadool open from 15 yards in front of the net. Fadool made the most of the one-on-one and blasted the ball to the left corner to break a scoreless tie.

Army came right back and answered with a goal in the 75th minute to tie the game 1-1. Junior forward Jen Pascucci converted on her only shot of the night for her first score of the season by playing a rebound from eight yards in front of the net.

Where Army controlled the tempo for most of the first half, out-shooting the Owls 6-4, Rice gained the momentum late in the contest and then carried it over into the extended time. The Blue and Gray out-shot the Black Knights 9-4 in the second stanza and 1-0 in OT.

The win was the Owls' first overtime victory in three tries this season. It avenged the overtime loss from last Friday night, the team's lone defeat of the season. The Owls improved to 4-1-1 on the year. Army fell to 1-3.

Rice will next host UNLV on Sunday at the Track/Soccer Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 pm. A box score for Friday's game can be viewed at the link listed above.
