HOUSTON ? The Rice men?s and women?s cross country teams opened the season strong at the Houston/Rice MacGregor Park Relays Wednesday at MacGregor Park.

In the women?s six-mile race, the Rice duo of Brandi Armstrong and Anna Reeve finished second behind the unattached pair of Laura Kelley and Marissa Daniels. Armstrong and Reeve finished the race in 36.11 to begin the cross country season for the women. Rice?s Janine Moreau and Liz Gleeson posted a time 39.48 in a top-10 finish.

For the men, the Owls top duo was Steven Magness and Pablo Solares. Magness, the 2003 Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year, combined with Solares for a time of 40.25 on the eight-mile course. David Axel and Seth Nuemuller took fifth in 40.59.

Participants competed in two-person relay teams with each runner alternating laps for a total of four trips around the course. The men's course was two miles for a total race of eight miles, while the women's course was 1.5 miles for a total distance of six miles.

After Wednesday?s tuneup, the Owls begin their quest for the WAC title with the Rice Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 11 on the campus of Rice University.
