Women's Basketball: Neaves Leads Rice to Hackerman Title

HOUSTON ? Tournament MVP Lauren Neaves recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead Rice to a 71-51 victory over Kent State in the championship game of the Texas Orthopedic Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational Saturday night at Autry Court.

Neaves was one of three Lady Owls to score in double figures, and one of two to notch double-digit rebounds. Annie Peck scored her first double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Rice opened the game on a 14-0 run, holding Kent State scoreless until 13:09 in the first half. The Lady Owls then increased their lead to as much as 17 at the break, thanks in part to eight points from Neaves. Rice shot 41 percent in the first half (12-of-29) and 82 percent from the free throw line (nine-of-11).

After trading baskets to open the second half, the Golden Flashes quickly chipped away at Rice?s 19 point lead. Lindsay Shearer scored 10 points to bring KSU to within four with 10:06 remaining. A free throw from Samantha Stovall shortly thereafter sparked a 16-0 Rice run to put the Lady Owls head for good. Peck scored six points in 1:39 to help Rice improve to 5-4 on the season, and bring home the tournament title.

For the game the Lady Owls shot 40 percent (22-of-55), and held Kent State to 29 percent (15-53). Singleton finished the night with 10 points, while Neaves added a career-high six blocks to her double-double.

Shearer led Kent State with 17 points.

Members of the all-tournament team were: Jennifer Hickmon, Texas Southern; Niamh Dwyer, Monmouth; Lindsay Shearer, Kent State; Malika Willoughby, Kent State; Michelle Woods, Rice. Lauren Neaves was named the tournament MVP.

Rice will take a break for final exams and will return to the court Dec. 17 at 7 pm against Texas State at Autry Court.
