Soccer: Three Owls Named To All-Region Team

2004 NSCAA All-Central Regional Teams

Rice student-athletes Lauren Shockley, Caitlin Currie and Erin Droeger were all named to the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America all-Central Region teams the organization announced on Thursday.

Shockley and Currie, a pair of seniors who helped start the Rice program four years ago, were NSCAA second team all-region selections while Droeger, a junior, was a third team honoree. The Owl trio paced Rice soccer to its most successful season in the program's young history. The Blue and Gray won a school record 14 games and earned its first-ever postseason bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Lauren Shockley, a senior goalkeeper from Indianapolis, was named the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the league and ranking among the national leaders in goals-against average (0.54). She also earned first team all-academic accolades with a 3.43 grade point average majoring in English.

Caitlin Currie, a senior defender from Plano, earned all-WAC honors this season. It was the third time in her career she was selected among the best players in the WAC. She was selected to the WAC's 2004 all-tournament team and has started 76 of the 77 games in Rice soccer history.

Erin Droeger, a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif., was also a first team all-WAC selection this season. Droeger's primary game assignment was to cover the opposing team's top scoring threat. All three Owls combined to make Rice among the NCAA leaders for fewest goals allowed during the season (0.52 per game).
