Women's Basketball: Lady Owls Fall in Exhibition, 70-61

HOUSTON ? Despite 12 points from Lauren Neaves, the Lady Owls couldn?t pull out a win against Everyone?s Internet in exhibition action Sunday afternoon at Autry Court.

In the final tune-up before Friday?s season opener, the Lady Owls showed signs of greatness. Neaves added seven rebounds to her team-leading 12 points, while senior Michelle Woods chipped in eight and grabbed eight boards.

Rice led by as many as seven in the first half, thanks in part to a trey from Woods and a layup from Eshombi Singleton. EV1.net, a team comprised of former collegiate players, took the lead with just over 11 minutes in the first half, and never looked back. Jocelyn Penn had 14 of her 21 points in the first half, as EV1.net enjoyed a 39-28 lead at the break.

Rice came out strong in the second period, cutting the visitor?s lead to six midway through the half. Neaves scored eight points in the second period to lead the Lady Owls, however, knocking down shots seemed to trouble the Lady Owls. Rice got good looks, but couldn?t get them to fall, eventually falling to EV1.net by nine points.

Penn led all scorers with 21 points, while Kesha Watson chipped in 19. Neaves was the Lady Owls top scorer.

Rice will open the season Friday night at home in the first round of the preseason Women?s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Tip-off against McNeese State is 7 pm at Autry Court.
