Volleyball: Owls Win at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. ? The Rice volleyball team improved to 21-3 on the year with a 30-23, 30-17, 30-20 victory at Louisiana Tech in Western Athletic Conference action Saturday night.

The Lady Techsters jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in game one. Rice scored the next three, but Louisiana Tech continued to battle and kept the Owls back on their heels. The Owls finally knotted the score at 17, but the Lady Techsters answered with a 3-0 rally. Rice took advantage of a Louisiana Tech error, and took its first lead of the game after a pair of blocks from Rebecca Kainz and Lindsey Carter, and some solid serving from Kristina Dennemann. Finally taking the momentum, Olaya Pazo sparked a 6-0 Rice run with three kills to close out the frame.

After trading points to open game two, the Owls launched a 7-0 run behind Rebeca Pazo?s serve and never looked back. Pazo paced Rice in the frame with six kills on .500 hitting.

The Owls wasted no time in taking control of things in game three, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Rice would push its lead to as many as 11 as it cruised to victory. The middles led the Owls attack with Kainz and Tessa Kuykendall hitting .833 with five kills on six swings in the frame.

Rebeca Pazo led Rice with 15 kills and 17 digs. Kuykendall and Carter were next with 11 kills each. Carter also added 16 digs while Yvette Kirk recorded 15.

Ambra Hayes led the Lady Techsters with 10 kills and Heather Anderson had 28 digs.

The win improves the Owls record to 21-3 overall and 10-1 in the WAC, while Louisiana Tech falls to 5-19 and 1-10 in league action. Rice now returns home for a WAC match against Texas-El Paso on Thursday at Autry Court at 7 pm.
