Soccer: Owls Battle To 0-0 Tie At Boise State

BOISE, Idaho -- The Rice soccer team fought to a 0-0 tie with Boise State Sunday afternoon on the road in Idaho, completing its two-game weekend Western Athletic Conference road swing without a loss.

Rice recorded more shots in the game than Boise State (15-12), as well as more shots on goal (7-5), but the Owls could not push one through to the back of the net. Some of the Blue and Gray's best attempts of the day included a pair of headers by true freshman Samantha Conn in the first half, a long blast by senior Betsy Huete in the second that went just over the crossbar, and an overtime shot by Clory Martin that could have ended the contest after the freshman forward broke past the Bronco back line.

Owl senior goal keeper Lauren Shockley meanwhile posted her eleventh complete game shutout of the season with her third-consecutive scoreless outing. She worked all 110 minutes in the net for another solid display in her fifth overtime game of 2004. Shockley made five saves on the day, including one daring out-of-the-box joust on a Boise State breakaway that prevented a possible score.

Rice moved to 11-3-3 on the season and 3-2-1 in WAC play. Boise State is now 9-7-2 and an even 2-2-2 against the league.

The Owls will next face WAC rivals San Jose State and Fresno State at home on Friday (Oct. 29) and Sunday (Oct. 31), respectively. Not only is the critical seeding for the upcoming WAC Tournament on the line, but the Owls 10 seniors who helped start the program from scratch four years ago will be honored for their final home game.
