Soccer: Hawaii Edges Rice In WAC Opener 1-0

WAIPAHU, Hawaii -- A Hawaii goal in the second half was the difference in a 1-0 win over the Rice soccer team in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools Friday night at the Waipahu Peninsula Soccer Stadium just outside Honolulu.

The hard-fought 1-0 score, played a long way from home while fighting some time-zone fatigue and in front of a rowdy crowd of 832, was a solid effort but not the final outcome the Blue and Gray was looking for. The defeat snapped Rice's non-losing streak at seven games and is only the second loss for the Owls in 11 outings this season.

Rice was well aware of the scoring threat posed by Hawaii goals-leader Natasha Kai, but it was junior forward's younger sister, sophomore Krisha Kai, who tallied the game's lone goal in the 58th minute. Krisha Kai took a pass from her older sister and converted on a shot from just inside the 18-foot line.

It was the first goal Rice has allowed in four games and only the fourth time an opponent had scored on the on the Owls this season. Hawaii recorded more shots, 17-7, and led in corner kicks, 5-2, on the night.

Rice was not able to turn its best chances into goals. In the first half senior Ashley Anderson blasted a ball with the wind that went hard but high. In the second half senior Sarah Yoder's shot on goal was saved. True freshman Samantha Conn had the ball and the UH keeper behind her outside the 18-foot line, but sent an attempt wide as defenders scrambled to the rescue.

Rice is now 7-2-2 overall and 0-1 in the WAC. Hawaii moved to 8-2-2 on the year and 1-0 against the league. The Owls will next face WAC rival Tulsa on the road on Friday night before meeting TCU in Fort Worth on Sunday afternoon.
