Soccer: Rice Claims 1-0 Win Over UTEP

HOUSTON -- True freshman Clory Martin's team-leading seventh goal of the season and the ninth complete game shut out by senior goalkeeper Lauren Shockley lifted the Rice soccer team to a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference win over Texas-El Paso Sunday afternoon at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.

Rice jumped out to the lead early in the contest. In the fifth minute Clory Martin fielded a long crossing pass from teammate Erin Droeger 10 yards in front of the goal and blasted away. The attempt hit the post, but Martin had wisely followed her shot. She moved past the UTEP defenders and played the carom for a follow-up.

Martin, the team's leading goal-scorer, would not miss again and struck the ball to the back of the net. Her seventh goal of the season is the most ever scored by an Owl freshman in the young four-year history of the program.

That was all the margin the Owls needed as Lauren Shockley recorded another solid defensive outing. The senior keeper made saves on all three of the Miners' shots on goal. UTEP took more shots than Rice, 15-6, and led in corner kicks 8-1. The Miners in fact had one final corner as time was winding down, but Shockley came out and punched the ball out of danger.

Rice hung on for the win, improving to 10-3-2 overall and 2-2 in the WAC. It was the Blue and Gray's sixth 1-0 win of the season and seventh by a one-goal margin. UTEP moved to 9-4-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference.

The Owls will next be on the road for a pair of WAC games against league rivals Nevada and Boise State. Rice meets Nevada in Reno on Oct. 22 followed by an afternoon game at Boise State on Oct. 24.
