Men's Cross Country: Owls Third at Chile Pepper Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? The Rice Owls continued their stellar season with a third place finish at the Chile Pepper Invitational, Saturday.

With 183 points, Rice placed behind host Arkansas and a team comprised of Arkansas Alumni. Junior Marcel Hewamudalige and sophomore Stephen Magness each posted top-10 finishes to lead the Owls.

Hewamudalige, a two-time Western Athletic Conference runner of the week this season, placed third overall on the 10K course with a time of 29:45.6. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native has won Rice?s two previous meets this season, the Rice Invitational and the Islander Opener Splash.

Magness, the 2003 WAC freshman of the year, took eighth in just his second meet of the season. The Houstonian crossed the line in 29:50.3. Magness?s only other finish of the season was second at the Rice Invitational.

Rice will make a run for its first WAC championship since 2001 on Oct. 30. The 2004 WAC cross country championships will be held in Ruston, La.
