FRESNO, Calif. - The Rice Owls set new school records in the decathlon and heptathlon, as day two of competition concluded at the WAC outdoor track and field championships at Wamerdam Field in Fresno, Calif., Thursday.
Junior Keitha Moseley successfully defended her heptathlon title, totalling 4,862 points, topping a school record of 4,751 points set in 1982 by Monique Miller. Moseley finished first in three of the seven events, crossing the finish line first in the 100 meter hurdles, 200 meters, and took the top spot in the high jump. The Barbados native ran 13.88 in the 100 meter hurdles, an event in which she owns the top spot in the conference this season with a mark of 13.52, an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Her 24.56 in the 200 meters was not her fastest of the season, but it was enough for a first place finish. Moseley posted a personal best 5-09 3/4 in the high jump, the second best in the league this season, just shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She will compete this weekend in each of those three events, and will run a leg of the 4x100 meter relay. The Rice women's team is looking to defend their outdoor title, and their fifth of the last six conference championships.
Sophomore Ryan Harlan was crowned the decathlon champion with 7,319 points, a new Rice record, including five first place finishes. The Hewitt (Midway) native took the top spot in the long jump, shot put, high jump, 110 meter hurdles, and discus. Harlan posted a personal best in the long jump, with a mark of 23-06 3/4, threw 47-11 in the shot put, tied his season best 6-09 3/4 in the high jump, ran 14.32 in the 110 meter hurdles and threw a heave of 110-08 in the discus. Harlan is the 2000 national decathlon champion, and will compete in the javelin and high jump this weekend. The Owls are in search of their first WAC outdoor title.
Competition begins Friday, with finals in the men's and women's 3,000 meter steeplechase and 10,000 meters, and women's javelin, pole vault, shot put, and long jump, and the men's long jump and high jump.
