FRESNO, Calif. - Fabulous freshmen Richard and William Barker and sophopmore Matthias Mathaes continued to receive accolades Sunday, garnering multiple all-Western Athletic Conference honors.
Richard Barker was named the league's freshman of the year and was one of only seven players named to the all-WAC first team for singles. Through the course of his freshman campaign, Barker recorded a 25-13 overall record, including a 15-8 mark in dual matches playing at the Owls' top position.
Mathaes was named to the all-WAC second team for the second year in a row. He has recorded a 20-15 record this season, including a 15-9 dual-match mark playing primarily at the two and three positions.
The tandem of Richard and William Barker was named to the all-WAC second team for doubles. The Barker brothers tallied a 16-4 doubles record overall, including a perfect 9-0 record in dual matches while playing at the number one spot.
The frosh honor is the first for an Owl, while this is the fourth consecutive year a Rice player has been named all-WAC in singles. This is just the second time since joining the league that a Rice doubles team has earned all-WAC honors.
The Barkers and the rest of the Owls are now waiting for Thursday to find out if they have earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The selection show begins at 3 pm and can be viewed on the internet only at the men's tennis page at www.ncaachampionships.com.
