Jura, Waite pace Owls to victories at Rice Invitational

Rice senior John Jura finished first in the men's university division, and junior Katie Waite finished first in the women's division to lead the Owls to both team victories in the 26th Annual Rice Invitational Saturday on the Rice campus.
Jura finished the 5K with a time of 15:41.53, followed by Lamar's Mike McGovern with a time of 15:48.31. Rice teammates junior Keith Pierce and senior Lachlan McArthur finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Rice received 44 points to edge Sam Houston State with 48, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Lamar, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
Waite easily outdistanced the rest of the field on the 2.1-mile course with a time of 11:51.99. A pair of true freshmen made impressive debuts for the Owls as Shannon Murto finished second with a time of 12:05.21 and Magdalena Sandoval finished eighth with a time of 12:35.84 and senior Marisa Bono finished ninth. Summer Bell, Liza Ruckman and Erin Brand also finished among the top 15.
The Owls totaled 26 points, followed by Sam Houston State, the University of Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar. Sam Houston's Kacy Phillips, Jennifer Engelbrink and Karina Mancias each placed in the top 10 for the Bearkats.
The next meet for the Rice women is Sept. 22 at the University of Texas at San Antonio and the men do not run until the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. on Oct. 7.
Nearly 40 high school also participated in the meet. The MacArthur boys and the Katy Taylor girls won in the 5A divisions. Mark Walters of Clear Creek ran the fastest high school boys time at 10:07.00 on the two-mile course, and Kelley Wright of Klein Forest ran the fastest girls time with 12:01.16.
