Track and Field: Sommerfeld Takes First Place in Shot Put

COLLEGE STATION Jessica Sommerfeld shined Saturday at the Texas A&M
Invitational, winning the shot put and placing second in the discus.
Sommerfeld took top honors in the shot put with a throw of 46-3 1/2 and
came in second in the discus with a toss of 161-11. Teammate Rebecca Perry
also fared well in the field events, placing sixth in the triple jump with
a leap of 37-3 1/4. Marisa Bono was the Owls' top runner of the day,
finishing fourth in the 3,000 meters in 10:57.64. Jamila Nelson and Tracy
Buettner finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles in
times of 1:12.10 and 1:13.71.
For the men, Tommy Oleksy came in second in the long jump with a mark of 46-6 3/4 and fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 46-6 3/4. Todd LeBlanc placed just ahead of Oleksy in the triple jump, posting a 47-6 1/4 mark for fourth. Rashad Stafford also placed high in two events, finishing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.06 and ninth in the 400 hurdles in 53.27. Scott Byer also had a good day for the Owls turning in a 1:52.61 time in the 800 meters for third place.
The Owls will run at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth on Saturday.
