HOUSTON - The Rice Owls dropped their record-tying ninth straight match at home against Stephen F. Austin State, 3-2, Tuesday.
Despite having two players with triple-doubles, two players tally double-doubles and six players notch double-digit digs, the Owls couldn't pull off the win over SFA. Rice (14-14, 3-8) was out-hit by the Ladyjacks (16-12) .207 to .177 in the 15-7, 14-16, 15-11, 9-15, 10-15 loss. Senior Karolina Zelinka notched her 19th double-double on the year with 18 kills and 24 digs. Junior Leigh Leman recorded her 16th double-double this season behind an 19-9-51 hitting effort, and 17 digs. Leman also put up a career high 27 assists and added two blocks. Freshman Rebekah Neal reached the double-double mark for only the second time this season with 14 kills and 10 digs, in addition to putting up a career high 38 assists and serving up three service aces for the Owls. Senior Klara Zelinka tallied her seventh double-double this year with 18 kills and 14 digs. The younger Zelinka also added four block assists, and needs just one more to crack the top five all-time at Rice.
"We're not playing consistently," captain Karolina Zelinka said. "It's frustrating, but we have to rebound and be ready for this weekend."
Leading the Ladyjacks was junior Kristy Rhodes who knocked down 35 kills and hit the court for eight digs.
Rice heads to California this weekend to face conference foes Fresno State on Friday night and San Jose State on Saturday. The Owls return to action at Autry Court next Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m. when they host TCU.
