Volleyball: Spartans Knock Off Owls 3-0

San Jose State (19-7, 10-3) out-hit Rice (15-15, 4-9) in game one .347 to .075 for the 15-7 win. Senior Karolina Zelinka and junior Leigh Leman combined for seven of the Owls' 10 kills and tallied eight digs between the two.
The Spartans opened game two with a 9-0 lead before the Owls could score. The rest of the game was all SJSU, as they clearly won 15-1. Rice could only muster up a .043 hitting percentage to the Spartans .481. Zelinka and Leman combined for only three kills in the loss.
Game three saw a change in the lineup for the Owls, as junior Alison Broadfoot, sophomores Mariel and Elizabeth Davenport Pollock and freshman Allison Donahue played significant time for Rice. SJSU opened the game with an 8-0 lead before Rice could get on the board off a Braodfoot kill. The Owls then rallied to pull within one point, 10-11, but couldn't pull off the win. SJSU closed the game with four straight points to win 15-11, despite hitting .130 in game three. Leman and Zelinka finished the night with with five kills apiece.
"Some of our girls were put on the spot, and they responded well in game three," Rice head coach Julio Morales said. "That's what it's all about."
In their last home match of the season, the Spartans were led by senior middle blocker Joslynn Gallop who knocked down 12 kills and collected 10 digs.
The Owls return home to Autry Court this week, when they host TCU on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Rice will honor their three seniors, Remi Aderohunmu, Karolina and Klara Zelinka, on Saturday, November 18 at 3 p.m. in the last home match of the season.
