Volleyball: Owls Stop Fresno State, 3-2

It was girl scout night at Autry Court, and 400 young girls were treated to the Owls 15-4, 8-15, 15-2, 10-15, 15-8 victory over the Bulldogs. This was the second time in as many nights that Rice played to five games. Senior Karolina Zelinka had a super evening, leading all players with a .279 hitting percentage (21-4-61). Zelinka now stands at sixth all-time at Rice with 1,287 kills and jumps to third all-time in digs with 1,007. Her younger sister, Klara Zelinka, knocked down 13 kills on 37 attempts and only three errors, hitting .270 for the Owls. Junior Leigh Leman led everyone with 22 digs. As a team, Rice hit .293, served up nine service aces, and improves to 13-5, 3-2 in the WAC.
Fresno State was led by junior Shauna McQuaid, who knocked down 18 kills on 39 attempts with 10 errors. The Bulldogs fall to 9-9, 2-2 in conference play.
Next up for the Owls is a non-conference match against Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners visit Autry Court Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. Rice will resume conference play next weekend in Dallas when they face Southern Methodist on Friday night, and Texas Christian on Saturday.
