Three players posted double-doubles for the Owls. Junior Leigh Leman, who recorded her fifth straight double-double, knocked down 17 kills and added 22 digs. Rice also had a strong showing from the Zelinka sisters. Karolina Zelinka hit .113 (16-9-62) and hit the court for 11 digs, while Klara Zelinka posted 12 kills on 32 attempts with six errors, and contributed 12 digs. Klara also went up for four block assists, which moves her to sixth all-time at Rice with a total of 249. As a team the Owls hit .224 and served up four service aces.
"This was an important match for us," Rice head coach Julio Morales said. "This match sets the tone for our weekend play, and now we know how we must perform to make the [NCAA] tournament."
The Roadrunners were held to just .124 hitting percentage, led by junior Stacy Schmidt, who knocked down 17 kills on 53 attempts and nine errors.
Rice improves to 14-5 overall, and plays their next three matches on the road. This weekend the Owls head to Dallas where they will face SMU on Friday night and TCU on Saturday. Rice then travels to play Southwest Texas State next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Owls return home to Autry Court on October 20 at 7 p.m. when they face conference newcomer Nevada.
