Cross Country: Owl Men, Women Win Rice Invitational

Rice junior Shaquandra Roberson claimed top individual honors to lead the Owls to the women's university division title with 21 points. She ran 10:18 on the course, which was slightly over 3K. The Rice women finished one, three, four, six and seven.
The Rice men, led by Lachlan McArthur, scored 27 points to win the men's university division. McArthur finished second overall in the three-mile race in a time of 14:28, just three seconds off the pace of Luis Armenteros, who was running for the Rice Alumni team. Rice's Tyson Hendricksen, the defending champion from 1998, finished third.
Clear Lake defended its 1998 team championship, claiming this year's girls varsity division with 41 points. Katy Taylor's Sarah Sauvageau won the individual championship in a time of 12:09 and led her team to a second-place finish. Pearland was third.
Tuloso Midway won the boy's varsity division with 74 points. Clear Creek and Katy Taylor rounded out the top three. Alvin's Joseph McCellon remained undefeated and claimed top individual honors in a time of 9:57.
Katy Taylor claimed the boy's junior varsity title with two top-10 finishes. Dobie's Ronnie Strange claimed top honors, finishing 10:59, only three seconds in front of Taylor's J.J. Komp. The girls junior varsity division was won by Tiffany Sims-McCray of Hightower, who finished in a time of 12:02. The Clear Lake girls were also victorious in the junior varsity race with 22 points.
Dobie's Keith Wilson claimed the boy's freshman race leading the Longhorns to the team championship. Wilson finished in 11:23.
All high school races were run on a two-mile course.
