
Second-Half Shooting Sends Rice Past Grambling State

GRAMBLING – The Rice women's basketball team shook off a cold start to power past Grambling State 71-47 Wednesday afternoon at Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. The Owls claim their fourth-straight win to move to 9-3, while the Lady Tigers fall to 2-10.
Louann Battiston led the Owls with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists, while Aniah Alexis added 10 points, 10 rebounds, a block and an assist. Victoria Flores rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
As a team, Rice shot 29-of-70 (41.4%) from the floor and 10-of-27 (37%) from three-point range. The Owls were 3-of-5 (60%) from the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Flores' and-one conversion opened the game's scoring, with Hailey Adams following with a jumper to take an early 5-0 lead. Following a Lady Tigers score, Adams extended the lead back to five with a jumper. Grambling then tied the game before Battiston drilled a three. The two sides were tied 10-10 at the end of the first.
Second Quarter
Grambling opened the second with a pair of free throws before Jill Twiehaus tied the game with a layup. Battiston later sank a triple, with Myah Hazelton adding a score to go up by five. Leading by four, a quick 5-0 run by Battiston extended the lead, with Mylee Guinn adding a three to take a 12-point lead. Rice led 27-18 at the half.
Third Quarter
Back-to-back threes by Flores and Ennis opened the third quarter as the Owls took a 15-point lead. After trading scores, Flores sank another three to put the Owls up 38-21. Leading by 10, an Ennis three and Adams' layup extended the lead. Rice led 48-33 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
A pair of Alexis scores got the offense started in the fourth, with Hazleton tacking on a bucket to give Rice a 21-point lead. After trading baskets, Battiston hit her fourth three of the game, with Hayes and Guinn following with layups to go up 65-41. Hayes' and-one conversion and a Guinn three closed out the Rice scoring as the Owls secured the road win.

Alexis secured her second double-double of the season.
