Owls Earn Three American Weekly Honors

IRVING – The Rice volleyball team earned three of the four American Conference weekly honors, the league announced Monday.
Kaia Mateo was named Setter of the Week for the second straight week, while Gaby Mansfield earned Defensive Player of the Week and Aaliyah Smith was selected Freshman of the Week.
The Owls are coming off a 2-0 weekend, sweeping East Carolina and Charlotte on the road.
Mateo recorded her sixth double-double of the season Sunday with 45 assists and 10 digs. She averaged 13.67 assists per set and totaled 82 assists over six sets, leading the conference for the week. She also added 12 digs and five blocks.
Aaliyah Smith collected her second American weekly honor of the season. She led the Owls with 13 kills against Charlotte and totaled 20 kills on the weekend while hitting .300 with two blocks.
Mansfield earned her first American Player of the Week honor after previously receiving honorable mention recognition. She recorded 29 total digs, the most in the league last week, averaging 4.83 per set and adding two assists.
Rice will close out its home schedule this weekend, hosting North Texas on Friday and Florida Atlantic on Sunday for Senior Day.
