
Portello Earns American Weekly Honors

IRVING — Rice swimmer Ava Portello was named the American Swimming Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The sophomore posted a standout weekend in Louisiana, recording the conference's top times this season in both the 1,000 free (9:53.22) and 500 free (4:48.20). She also logged the fastest 200 free by an American swimmer since Nov. 5.
Portello earned three top-two finishes across two meets. She won the 1,000 free against Tulane on Nov. 7, then placed second in both the 200 free (1:48.40) and 500 free the following day against Tulane, LSU and Houston.
The Owls return to the pool Nov. 19 for the Phil Hansel Invitational hosted by Houston.
