Mateo Earns American Conference Honorable Mention

Irving – Rice Setter Kaia Mateo received American Conference Honorable Mention, the league announced on Monday.
Kaia Mateo helped lead the Owls to a perfect 2-0 weekend on the road, guiding the team to sweeps over UAB and Memphis. The junior setter totaled 63 assists across the two matches and directed the offense to a combined .287 hitting percentage.
Mateo opened the weekend with a strong performance Friday against UAB, recording her second double-double of the season. She finished with 32 assists and 14 digs, along with three blocks and a kill in the win.
She followed that effort with another steady outing Saturday at Memphis, adding 31 assists, seven digs, five blocks and four kills to cap the weekend sweep.
Through both matches, Mateo contributed five kills, 21 digs and eight total blocks, while averaging more than 31 assists per contest.
Rice (7-8, 3-1 American) will host South Florida on Friday and go to UTSA on Sunday.
