HOUSTON – The Rice volleyball team went the distance to defeat Wichita State 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (11-8, 7-1 American) extended its win streak to seven after edging the Shockers (13-7, 5-2 American) in five sets.
Kaia Mateo recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 57 assists and 19 digs.
Taylor Preston led the Owls' offense with 25 kills, while Aaliyah Smith and Lademi Ogunlana each added 14.
Gaby Mansfield anchored the back row with 22 digs, and Arissa Smith paced the defense at the net with a career-high 10 blocks.
Postgame Reaction – Head Coach Genny Volpe
"What a game. That was a fun match to be a part of as a coach. With all the ups and downs and some of the frustrations, that's just a really good team we beat. I give them a ton of credit, I think Wichita State is an elite team. They gave us a lot of problems defensively and showed great balance. I'm proud of how our team toughed it out. Preston really took over the match and showed why she's one of the best outside hitters in our league. Our back-row play picked up at the right time, they made key digs and big plays when it really mattered."
