Rice Athletics and the Office of Academic Advising jointly hosted the 38th Annual Scholar Athlete Celebration on Sunday at the R Room. The award winners were chosen based on character and accomplishment in school and in sport.
Rice President Reginald DesRoches, Provost Amy Dittmar, Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman, FAR Leo Costello and athletic director Tommy McClelland were in attendance for the evening. Director of Principles of Economics Program and Senior Lecturer James DeNicco delivered the keynote speech. Gabe Baker, a former Rice football standout and Bob Quin Award winner, played the school's alma mater, "Rice's Honor," to open the program.
Sponsored by the 'R' Association, Rice University Scholar Athletes are selected from a pool of Honor Athletes (3rd, 4th, and 5th year student-athletes that maintain a 3.4 GPA) during the spring semester of every academic year. Each varsity team may honor up to three roster members with the title of Scholar Athlete and awardees are determined by the OAAA (Office of Academic Advising for Athletics) in conjunction with the Athletics Department coaching staff.
