Swim and Dive Posts Strong Results on First Day of Phill Hansel Invitational

HOUSTON - Rice swim and dive holds onto second place after the first day of the Phill Hansel Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston at the UH Natatroium.
In the preliminaries, Rice posted a first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle with Ella Dyson's 4:47.16. Other notable finishes in the same event included Ava Portello (fifth, 4:49.28), Amelia Kane (seventh, 4:50.01), and Ava Hamblett (eighth, 4:53.01). In the 200 IM prelim, both Reese Cole (2:02.20) and Mimi Filkin (2:02.68) posted top-eight finishes to round out top-eight prelim finishes for Rice.
In the A Relay of the 200 Free Relay, the team of Arielle Hayon, Lizzie Zadel, Filkin and Portello claimed a third place finish with a final time of 1:31.87.
In the 500 Free A Final, Dyson improved her time with a finish at 4:46.68, finishing third. Portello held steady at fifth but shaved off nearly a full second at 4:48.31, and Kane and Hamblett stayed in seventh and eighth with times of 4:49.78 and 4:52.26, respectively.
The 200 IM A Final saw Close and Filkin improve their standings and times, with Cole finishing in fourth with a time of 2:01.74, and Filkin posting a sixth-place finish with a time of 2:01.84.
In the 50 Free, Lizzie Zadel posted the highest finish for an Owl, with a fifth-place finish in the B Final at 23.60, while Catherine Eland posted an eighth-place finish for Rice with a time of 23.78 in the same final.
Finally, Rice claimed a fourth-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay A Final with Hamblett, Siiri Einio, Hayon, and Portello posting a final time of 3:40.90, nearly a seven-second improvement of their seed time of 3:47.45.
Rice will resume action tomorrow morning from UH. The current standings can be found below.
