
Rice Drops Battle at No. 6 Texas

Austin, Texas – The Rice Volleyball team fell at No. 6 Texas, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 26-15), Monday night at Gregory Gymnasium.
The Owls (4-4) were held to a .140 hitting percentage while Texas hit .283. Senior outside hitter Danyle Courtley led the Owls with 10 kills, hitting .280. Junior right side hitter Lola Foord hit a season-high .583 behind seven kills on 12 attempts. Freshman outside hitter Cindy Tchouangwa added nine kills.
Senior setter Izzy Rawlings had 24 assists and senior libero Nia McCardell added 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The teams battled to a 4-4 tie through the first eight points. But a 12-2 Longhorn run gave them a 16-6 advantage. Three straight points cut the deficit to seven, however UT extended its lead back to 10 before taking the set, 25-16. Courtley hit .286 with three kills.
Second Set
The Owls battled back from an early deficit before ultimately falling, 25-21. Texas jumped out to a 14-6 lead, but Rice went on an 8-2 run to pull within 16-14. But with UT holding a 21-19 lead, it scored four of the final six points to take the set. Foord led the Owls hitting .800 on four-of-five attempts.
Third Set
Texas controlled the set from the beginning, opening a 7-1 lead on the way to a 25-15 victory. Rice battled brought it back to 14-10, however five straight points gave the Longhorns a 19-10 advantage. Courtley (4 kills) hit .667 and Ford (3 kills) hit .429.
UP NEXT
Rice travels to Manhattan, Kan., for the K-State Invitational, beginning this Friday, September 15, against Long Island. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be streamed by ESPN+.
